Ross Travels In His Home Built Carolinian Dory
A builder named Ross, just sent me these pictures and email:
Hey Mr. Spira, (You can call me, Jeff)
I'm a 17 year old High School student from Massachusetts. I built this boat with the help of my Dad.
I built this boat to replicate what my Grandpa did in 1956. He modified an old coastguard life boat and went down the intra coastal waterway from the Hudson to Florida
when he was 16. He told me this story and I wanted to replicate it but didn't have a boat to do it in. So, I built one.
My plan was to similarly take the boat all the way down the IntraCoastal Waterway to Florida.
Starting September 1, I took the boat from Hudson NY on the Hudson River due south through New York City and out the New Jersey coast into Manasquan inlet. It was there
I learned my Grandpa (who's trip I was replicating) unexpectedly passed. The trip then had to be postponed. I'm itching to make it all the way down now that I have a
taste of it and am leaving for round two as soon as I finish my senior year of High School.
The build was hard work. I can't even convey how much time I spent on the building process. It took me about a year and half starting Spring of 2019 and ending late July
of 2020. March through July I worked hard on the boat consistently everyday after my High School went online. It was hard and long work but I'm extremely happy with the
outcome and I've never seen a Dory built quite like it. All the finishing touches took the most time but I think it was worth it. I just love how it looks. I get
compliments at every boat ramp I go to and every one is astonished at the boat.
Thank you for designing this boat! I remember googling wooden boat plans and I would have never known the crazy journey and self discovery it has brought me when I
finalized your 18' Carolinian as the build.
Thank you,
Ross
Thank you for the great story and pictures. Deepest condolences for the loss of your grandfather, as well.
Please send descriptions and photos of your continued trip. I would like to create more blog and social media postings of your trip. I'm sure that many of my customers are eager to hear about your journey.

Please don't be embarrassed to send in photos of your projects. I get a lot of emails from people who tell me about their build but never send any pictures. I'd love to see them, as would all of the other people who are either building a boat or thinking about it. They need all the encouragement they can get.
