Wade Colclough's Recently Completed Champlain Skiff

Wade Colclough just sent me these pictures and this email about his Champlain Skiff build:

Hello Mr. Spira,

I think you'll like these pictures of the Champlain Skiff that I've built in the last year. It was a great learning experience working with epoxy. I puttered with the construction for several months. Then I was laid off from my job as a swamp tour boat captain because of Covid 19 and had plenty of time for boat building.

The frames are Honduras mahogany and the plywood is Aquatech meranti. I used 3/8" for the bottom because there's stumps and cypress knees where I'll be using the boat. I have to compliment you on your design. The sheer of the boat is lovely. I built custom boats about 40 years ago and learned carpentry and boat building from some wonderful guys, some of whom had worked for Higgins during World War 2 building the landing craft that brought troops ashore at Normandy and Pacific islands. Since then I have wanted to build a boat for myself, but life got in the way.

I've shrimped offshore, fished for tuna and swordfish, and been captain of 250 foot oilfield supply boats. For the past 5 years have been doing swamp tours in the Honey Island swamp in southern Louisiana part time. When I turned 70 recently I thought "if I don't do it now I never will," and that's when I bought a set of your plans. You simplify the construction and make it very doable.

Thanks for what you do.

Wade Colclough

I'd love to see them, as would all of the other people who are either building a boat or thinking about it. They need all the encouragement they can get.
