Plans to build the 15' St. Croix Traditional Canoe

The St. Croix River meanders its way between the states of Minnesota and Wisconson. It's a fabulous place, especially in the autumn when the leaves are changing. It's the first place I really appreciated some of the beautiful riverways in the center part of the US, having lived near saltwater prior to our family's relocation to mid-continent.

The St. Croix canoe is an easily built homage to the traditional Native American canoe, capable of being easily paddled with a single paddle and carrying heavy loads while capable of getting through only inches of water as well as wild whitewater. Unlike most canoes, it's easily built of sheet plywood utilizing my unibody composite framing technique resulting in a light, strong structure.

Building an ultralight stitch-and-glue Boat

About Ply on Frame Canoes

I thought I'd try my hand at designing canoes utilizing my light and strong unibody conposite construction method that has proven itself so successful with many other boat hull designs. At the time of writing, over 1000 boats have been built utilizing this inexpensive but sturdy method worldwide. It utilized construction grade lumber, bonded using modern glues, into a single unitized structure then covered with a thin layer of fiberglass and epoxy. This method has beenused for sea boats, whitewater drift boats, and high speed boats, all with amazing success.

You can build one of these canoes in your garage, back yard or basement in a couple of weekends using materials and tools you probably already have for mere spare change, and use it for a lifetime.
