Plans to build the 17' [5.1 M] Ablemarle Power Skipjack

The Ablemarle was designed for a customer who was looking for offshore boat operations using a very small, economical diesel engine. This boat can handle all sorts of conditions, cary heavy loads, yet move along at hull speed with only a few horsepower. It could be powered by as little as 10 HP, but also handle up into the 30s if you really want. It'll operate using inboard sailboat auxiliary type diesels, or high thrust outboards. It's not built for speed, but will bring you home in a blow with a big load of gear or fish. Easily built of standard dimensional lumber and plywood, this project should be a breeze for anyone with modest woodworking experience.

About Power Skipjacks

Plans to build a power skipjack boat

If you're content to move along at the boats hull spped, about 7 knots for a 30 foot boat, you should select a displacement hull. Going places on the water without burning a lot of fuel, calls for a displacement hull. To go 7 knots in a 30 foot boat, you'll only need about 15 horsepower or so. For a diesel engine that means a bit more than 1/2 gallon per hour.

The Spira International Displacement hulls are cruisers, capable of making longer passages. They're easy to construct, inexpensive to operate, and will deal with just about any weather you may have to encounter at sea, along the coast, or making the long river excursions you are probably thinking about.
