Center Console on 15' Alamitos V-Bottom Dory

Joe LeBanc added a center console to his homebuilt 15' Alamitos V-Bottom dory, this year. He said:

Thanks Jeff, for the great design. We made the upgrade from tiller drive to center console for this season. It handles great. We've got a 70 hp two stroke and it planes well and can handle the chop.

What does your "Calc Max Power" note mean?

I got this email yesterday, and thought it would be of interest to others:

Hi Jeff,
Just wanted to ask what is exactly the "Calc. Max. Horsepower" you have on all your Study Plans?
And what is the maximum engine I can put on the Ixtapa Super Panga?
Thanks in advance and Best Regards.
K____

Here is my response:

Hi K____,
Thank you for your interest. I calculate the maximum horsepower that the hull can use based on the Coast Guard maximum horsepower calculation method described in their Homebuilt Boat Safety publication. I have not tested this horsepower, nor am I sure that this much horsepower will be safe in the boat that you construct. It is my estimate only. I also recommend some horsepower to use in the design. I would use the recommended horsepower, but you may increase it up to the maximum horsepower as recommended by the calculation. It is up to YOU to be sure that you build the boat properly in accordance with the plans, that you select the appropriate lumber, cut the elements to shape appropriately, glue and screw the hull in accordance with the methods and materials selected, and test the use of any more power than I recommend. Please ensure the boat is in appropriate trim, and appropriate water conditions to see if a higher than recommended horsepower works.
Best of luck with your build.
Jeff

Seneca Pacific Power Dory Launched in Minnesota by Ben Simonowicz

I just got this email and video from Ben Simonowicz:

Hi Jeff,
I'm sending you some photos of my recently completed Seneca which I stretched out to 15'6". I had a blast building it and already want to build another!
With 300lbs of rocks in the boat and myself (modeling a motor and another person) it sits in about 4-5 inches of water and moves 3.4mph with a 50 thrust trolling motor. Next week I'll be putting a 40hp Mercury on it with a center console.
Thank You!
Ben Simonowicz

Craig Bias' Pescadero Carolina Dory in Florida

This was in my inbox this morning:

Hey Jeff,
Thought I'd send some photos of a Pescadero I recently finished. As you can see, I took some liberties with the interior. The boat floats in about 4-5" of water and runs over 20 mph with two guys and fishing gear (Suzuki 20hp). Thanks for an awesome design; the boat handles great and makes a terrific fishing platform.
I live in the west central Florida coast and built this to be a Tarpon hunter!

Landing Craft Door Options Added to Three Garvey/Dories

Because several customers have added bow doors (like a WWII Landing Craft) to my Garvey Dory designs, I have come up with an option on the 16' Wye River, the 19' Galveston and the 23' Puchie Special to add this feature. The design includes the hardware and sealing method that can be purchased at a popular online and phone order industrial distributor. These are great for wheelchair access.
