Plans to build the 14' Chalmette Microskiff
Here's my take on the polular new design, Microskiffs. The Chalmette Microskiff is a cross between a big heavy fiberglass flats boat and a stand-up paddleboard. It's a light, very easy to handle fishing machine that can slip in and out of 6 inch deep water where the big flats fish lurk, yet make tracks across the miles-wide bays you find along the the southeastern US both on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. It's cheap and easy to build, will flat out shock you, how fast you can go with only 5 horsepower or so, and give you a stable, stand-and-cast fishing platform in the shallows. You can knock it out in a few weekends and be ready to drop it in the water after work on those balmy summer evenings for an hour or two to pick up dinner.

Our study plans are two of the actual construction drawings. They're not enough information for you to build the boat, but they do give you the overall boat size, shape and construction methods. This is a pdf file readable with the free Adobe Acrobat pdf file reader.

Microskiffs are all the rage these days, along the Southeast US and Gulf coasts. Many boat owners head out alone most of the time, as I can attest from experience. These days with everyone being so busy, it's hard coordinating schedules, so you end up heading out whenever you can squeeze in some time, so it really makes sense having a smaller craft that's easy to transport, launch and handle solo. Having a micro-skiff also gets you into areas other boats just can't go and allows you to fish where the big ones hide.
These microskiffs are perfect for the big shallow bays of the gulf coast and southeast Atlantic seaboard, with their many shallow delta-like rivers that feed the bays. They're lightweight and can skim through knee-deep water with ease, while being stand-up stable and powered with lighweight low horsepower motors that can go all day on a single can of gas. Microskiffs are just what the doctor ordered for the busy fisherpeson who needs to steal a few hours for him or herself for some deserved R & R. As the song goes, It's not far back to sanity, at least it's not for me..."
